I want to aware people of the possibility of heat stroke with your pet. Heat stroke is an emergency and requires immediate treatment. Pets with shorter snots, (EXAMPLE: Boxers) have an even higher risk of over heating. As many dog owners know dogs do not sweat; they do not tolerate high environmental temperatures as well as humans do. Dogs depend upon panting to exchange warm air for cool air. But when air temperature is close to body temperature, cooling by panting is not an efficient process.
The reason why I want this to be known is because we have recently lost our male, Spencer, to heat stroke. Him along with our other dogs were running around the yard while we were cutting wood. The Dogs did have water and shade available also. But in Spencer's case, he was a BIG/ THICK dog; so it was even harder for him to depend on just panting. Sadly we found Spencer unresponsive and immediately brought in side to the air conditioned room, put him in cold water and then put a call into the Vet.
The Vet told us to take him there as soon as possible. When we had came there he became cold, they started him on fluids and gave us a 40% chance of him surviving, (Some of the side affects include hypothermia, kidney failure, and irregular heartbeat,These complications can occur with-in hours or days later depending on the severity.) To us a 40% chance was close to a 50% chance, (half glass full situation, and we just needed to fill it more).
Spencer was like one of my children, you want to do anything you can for them, and he would do anything for you.
Spencer was able to open his eyes but, could not move. It was obvious that Spencer was scared and he was still trying to fight to protect us. I told Spencer " I love you baby, it will be okay." and he began to moan. The vet said that was a good sign, and we began to be hopeful of his survival.
We they began to put him in his spot to stay overnight, and he began to panic, his heart became erratic and he had a seizure. It was then that the decision to put him to sleep became in his best interest.
We lost a "Once in a Lifetime" family member to what we call a normal day. So PLEASE watch your babies in the heat. Make sure they do not play to hard, have plenty of water and shade, as heat stroke can take your pet like it took my baby.
